Help Prevent Unscheduled Downtime
Surface rounding brushes, or SRBs, can extend the productivity of your DC motor or generator between overhauls. That’s because SRBs help prevent and repair many commutator and collector ring problems, significantly reducing both the frequency and duration of unscheduled downtime.
SRBs can be used as a preventative maintenance tool to remove rough spots and non-conductive films, caused by contamination. Also, SRBs can help with difficulties encountered between scheduled maintenance, ‘buying’ the user more time until the maintenance can be regularly done. Some of the typical symptoms that indicate that an SRB may be useful are:

At the heart of every SRB is a conductive, abrasive insert. This insert is the workhorse that gently grinds the rotating surface. A concave working surface is an important design feature. It forms the leading (L) and trailing (T) edges that allow the abrasive to hone down the high and pass over the low spots. (see below)
Installation is simple. Just replace the standard brush with a compatible SRB. Usually adding one SRB per brush path will help maintain or repair the commutator or ring. The progress of the SRB performance must be carefully monitored. Standard brushes should be reinstalled as soon as the surface has been restored.
